I was mulling over a recent conversation in #forest regarding the lack of more active roleplaying versus the feelings of some on exclusivity. I had some thoughts on this.
We have an issue of everybody mostly hanging about the Inn and just interacting. Most people do this because the area is undefined and unless someone is present nothing is going to come of just exploring the forest at random.
A number of folks want to restore #forest to pre-inn status. I am not sure how well this will work because nobody can actively DM the forest at all hours for any extended period let alone all hours, and and some of the characters involved need some sort of shelter to survive. The key, as I heard it, has more to do with constant gamemastering and less to do with the setting.
I have more on this, but I wanted to see if I could get it started.
So how do we solve this?
We need one or two consistent story threads going that are not character-centric. Someone needs to be willing to push this and not isolate players out of it. Perhaps we can have mini-GMs to bring up and use threads. Doing so would require communication.
A more extreme method would be to adjust the format. We can split the users and characters into groups based on availability...and have an equivalent GM for that time to run it. In either case it requires someone to oversee what is going on to make sure it's coherent...a head GM or overlord, if you will.
Maybe this is a good idea, maybe it's bonkers, but this is preferable to not doing anything for this. The discussion needs to happen at some point.
