Unfortunately, this isn't a weird fanfic about our characters in Resident Evil's very own Raccoon City. What this is about is gathering players to play a Resident Evil game, Resident Evil Outbreak as a matter of fact. "Weren't the servers for that shut down over a decade ago" you might ask. Well, thankfully, the internet is a wonderful place!
Since a dude-bro, who is also responsible for Metal Gear Online for PS2's coming-online-again, managed to capture the packet transfer from the RE:O servers and reverse engineer them, I was wondering if anyone would be up for giving his server(s) a test run. He did capture the packets for both games and managed to make servers for both games, File 1 and File 2 respectively. The catch, however, is he didn't capture them for the US or the PAL servers, which means we're dealing with Japanese here. Thankfully, Japanese RE:O F1/F2 have everything else except note, map, and item text in English which basically means the cut-scene voices and the ad-lib voices are in English so we can at least bug the crap out of each other with ad-libbed speech and understand what's being said. This means nerve wracking annoying things like "Kevin: YOKO, YOKO, YOKO, YOKO, YOKO Yoko: Yes? Kevin: YOKO, YOKO, YOKO, YOKO Yoko: Yes? Kevin: YOKO, YOKO, YOKO, YOKO" during the middle of a boss fight.
"This sounds great and all, but I don't have a PS2 anymore!" Well, thankfully, we live in a day and age where we don't physically need the required hardware to play games for these kinds of things. It started off in beta with loads of players playing this way and yes, you can join via emulation. However, the set up for doing so is a huge pain and most people shy away from it. While the server creator suggests not to play with emulation due to the problems it can cause for the overall game experience- like freeze ups, lock ups, random FPS jumps- I'm remaining optimistic. And I'm being hard-headed, but that's beside the point. It sounds terrible, but one advantage emulation has over physical hardware is the superior load time when entering areas, which I believe is two heartbeats. From what I've read, a lot of the beta testers moved to physical hardware to increase enjoyability and performance. It seems like you can, also, join the servers from a backwards capable PS3! "But, I don't read Japanese!" There exists an unofficial percentage patch for these games, but the server dev doesn't promote its use. The 62% patch, while incomplete, works the best. The 100% patch causes random crashing and freezing.
I was wanting to test this out with two people on physical and two people on emulation, but I'll be happy if I can at least play with one other person. While both games have their online modes, I'm much more familiar with Outbreak File 1 and I would greatly prefer this one over its sequel. I'll play on both games, though!
Lastly, I realize I should have put this FAQ first. Oh well.
